How I Overcame My Fear of International Travel
Found a New Way to Live
Dreaming of a New Travel Lifestyle
A few years ago, I boarded a plane for my first international trip feeling something I never expected—fear.
Not just the normal pre-trip jitters. I was so nervous that I started asking myself, WHY? Why do so many of us become anxious about traveling, especially internationally? Why do we let fear keep us from seeing the world we've always dreamed of exploring?
Travel had been a dream of mine since I was young, but like many people, life got in the way. Work, responsibilities and everyday routines kept that dream on hold for years. Eventually, I realized that if I kept waiting for the "perfect time," it might never come. So, I decided to create a lifestyle that made travel a priority instead of something I would only do someday.
As I approached 50, I found myself burned out and ready for a change. I knew I wanted a healthier, happier life, so I made the decision to spend more time traveling and scuba diving. That choice became a turning point. It helped me become healthier, more environmentally conscious and more appreciative of the incredible world around me. It also forced me to face a fear of traveling.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was to stop listening to fear. Instead of believing every negative story on the news or opinions from people who had never traveled, I started listening to experienced travelers. Their stories inspired confidence and reminded me that the world is filled with kind people, beautiful places and unforgettable experiences.
Scuba diving became my gateway to travel. The moment I discovered the incredible world beneath the ocean's surface; I wanted to see more. Every dive introduced me to new marine life in different destinations I never imagined visiting. Before long, exploring our amazing planet became one of my highest priorities.
Looking back, I only wish I had started sooner.
That's one of the reasons I created this blog. If sharing my experiences helps someone else overcome their fears and begin traveling, then every story is worth telling.
As I visited countries I once thought were far beyond my reach, I discovered something surprising: international travel was often just as affordable or even less expensive than traveling within my own country.
I began with several trips to islands throughout the Caribbean. At first, I wanted to see if travel really suited me and maybe even discover a future retirement destination. What I found was something much bigger.
I fell in love with traveling.
Every destination exceeded my expectations. The people were welcoming, the scenery was breathtaking and each island had its own unique personality. Eventually, I stopped staying exclusively at all-inclusive resorts because I wanted to experience more of each location. When I was working 70-hour weeks, resorts were convenient because I didn't have the time or confidence to research local areas. As I gained experience, I realized some of my best memories came from exploring beyond the resort gates.
Walking through local neighborhoods, eating at family-owned restaurants, visiting small shops and talking with local residents gave me experiences that no resort could ever offer.
One thing that surprised me most was how welcomed the local residences felt about visitors. Throughout my travels in the Caribbean, I was comfortable exploring many tourist areas during both the day and evening. Of course, every destination is different and it's always important to stay aware of your surroundings. Occasionally you'll encounter persistent street vendors, but learning how to politely say "no thank you" in several languages becomes part of the travel experience.
Travel has also taught me how to become a more responsible tourist. Every destination has its own culture, customs and rhythm. Taking the time to learn and respect those differences creates much richer experiences while helping support the communities you visit.
Even if you choose an all-inclusive resort, don't spend your entire vacation behind the gates. Book a local excursion, try family-owned restaurants, sample regional foods and explore nearby towns. You don't have to spend a fortune to experience the true culture of a destination. Guided tours can also be a wonderful way to learn local history, discover hidden gems and build confidence while exploring somewhere new.
Whenever possible, I choose to spend some of my travel budget at local restaurants, shops, markets and tour companies. Supporting local businesses helps communities thrive and creates more meaningful travel experiences for everyone.
No trip is ever perfect. There may be delayed flights, unexpected weather or the occasional unpleasant encounter. Don't let those moments define your vacation. Instead, focus on the incredible people you meet, the amazing food you discover, the new cultures you experience, and the memories you'll carry home for a lifetime.
Travel has changed my life in ways I never expected. It gave me confidence, introduced me to lifelong friends and showed me that the world is far more welcoming than fear had led me to believe.
If you've been dreaming about traveling but have been letting fear hold you back, I hope my journey encourages you to take that first step.
Dream about the travel lifestyle you've always wanted. Plan your adventures, find your own travel rhythm and don't be afraid to explore the world.
You might just discover that the greatest adventure begins the moment you decide to go.
