Enjoy the simplicities of exploring the areas near the city of Mérida, including the nearby beach town of Progreso, it is one of the most popular areas to visit in the Yucatán.
Known as the local beach vacation spot where you go to cool off in the summer months to relax or enjoy water sports. Finding a small boat to sail, fresh water fish or exploring the mangroves in a kayak or just relax on the beach for the day. Tip: Progreso is a cruise ship port, so plan accordingly, as it can be more crowded when the ships dock for a few hours of the day.
There are several breathtaking Cenotes to explore, so don’t miss the opportunity to visit at least one while you’re in Mexico. If you have time, take an extra couple of days to venture out to Valladolid for exploring the town and climb the ruins of Ek’ Balam.
Visiting the beautiful towns of Progreso Beach or Holbox is a popular choice, but if you’re looking for somewhere more authentic and off the beaten path, explore the less known areas of Izamal for amazing architecture, Sisal or El Cuyo for the small fishing villages, Las Coloradas for the Pink lagoon or Celestún Beach for flamingos in the Spring time. You can also travel to Campeche to tour Edzená and Calakmul. Mexico has so many more hidden gems to experience besides the tourist traps.
Check out the guided tours to get a feel and basic introduction to the city early in your visit. Look to see if a “Free Tour” is available in the area, by looking up tours online, such as Guru Walk that have become extremely popular, but don’t forget to tip.

Tours are available in different price ranges and categories for you to pick from. Once you arrive to Mérida, I’d recommend a low-cost food tour to get you started and it’s a great way to sample the local special dishes and not have to worry about finding a restaurant when you arrive.
Excursions for day trips to the Mayan Ruins of Chichén-Itzá – a major hot spot when visiting Merida. Some less crowded alternatives to explore are Mayapán, Uxmal & Kabah. These areas allow you to experience ruins with less vendors and stress from crowds.
Tip: When you join a free or paid walking tour for a quick introduction of the area, you can ask what conveniences are nearby or other questions that you may have.
